What this book is about
Robert Becker was a VA hospital orthopedic surgeon whose research career (1958–1980) accidentally overturned a century of biological dogma. Studying why salamanders can regrow amputated limbs while frogs cannot, he found that the difference wasn't chemical but electrical: a measurable direct-current (DC) "current of injury" flows at the wound site, and its polarity and magnitude determine whether the tissue regenerates or merely scars. This finding launched a three-decade research program showing that the body runs a second, overlooked nervous system — a slow, analog DC electrical network carried not by neurons firing impulses, but by the perineural cells (Schwann cells, glia, ependyma) that surround and insulate them. This system, Becker argues, controls growth, healing, regeneration, and consciousness itself, and it is the "missing chapter" that mechanistic, biochemistry-only medicine never wrote.
The book is Becker's first-person scientific memoir, structured in four parts that trace the widening circles of the discovery: (1) regeneration and wound healing, (2) the physics of how current flows through supposedly inert tissue (semiconduction in bone and nerve sheaths), (3) practical medical payoffs (bone-healing devices, silver-ion infection control, a theory of cancer as arrested dedifferentiation), and (4) the largest claims — that this DC system explains pain, sleep, hypnosis, acupuncture, consciousness, and the body's coupling to the earth's geomagnetic field, and that it is now being damaged by man-made electromagnetic pollution (power lines, radar, microwaves, VDTs) with measurable effects on cancer, birth defects, and mental health.
The second half of the book doubles as an exposé: Becker documents in detail how military and industrial interests, the NIH, VA, and peer-review "old boy" networks suppressed, defunded, and discredited his and others' bioelectromagnetics research for decades — culminating in a Postscript ("Political Science") that is a case study in how science actually gets funded, censored, and politicized, distinct from the textbook ideal.
